The biogenesis and integration of the protein and lipid constituents of the inner membrane are discussed in Chapter 12. The unique feature of this membrane is the broad spectrum of functions it performs. It was already indicated that the functional diversity of the inner membrane may be deceptive in view of the probable segregation of different enzyme systems in spatially separate domains. How the differentiation occurs is a special problem in the biogenesis of the bacterial membrane, and some aspects of this were discussed in a previous section. [Pg.13]

The biogenesis of a gram-negative bacterial envelope requires subsequent sorting mechanisms for its component proteins after their translocation across the inner membrane (Duong et al., 1997 Danese and Silhavy, 1998). In addition, some proteins such as proteases and toxins are secreted through the outer membrane to the extracellular space. Three major secretion pathways have been characterized (Salmond and Reeves, 1993). [Pg.296]

The biogenesis of LPS is a complex process involving various steps that occur at the plasma membrane followed by the translocation of LPS molecules to the bacterial cell surface. LPS biosynthesis employs a large number of enzymes. The core OS is assembled on preformed lipid A by sequential glycosyl transfer of monosaccharides, while the O antigen is independently assembled on undecaprenyl-phosphate (Und-P), a... [Pg.297]
