Backing-Incidents Warning

Mirrors on the lift truck as well as those mounted at blind corners, walkways, and dock areas are necessary. Also, any areas where red or yellow flashing lights could be mounted will warn the pedestrian of an approaching lift truck. These should be used where visibility is limited and pedestrian safety requires visual and audible warnings. Even the horn of the forklift can provide a warning to those on foot. [Pg.164]

Where equipment operates out-of-doors, in remote areas, or along roadways, proper lighting, both on the roadway and vehicle, signage, protective barriers, road maintenance, and employee training are necessary. [Pg.164]

Use reflective vests, flashlights, or brightly colored apparel to improve individual visibility if out-of-doors or where lighting is impaired. [Pg.165]

The use of backup alarms on counterbalanced trucks is a plus for the pedestrian as well as the operator. This warning device does much to help in alerting those on foot. In a noisy department the alarm may be difficult to hear. The alarm s volume should always be adjusted for the department in which the equipment is located. The equipment must not be tampered with. Backing incidents injure many employees each year. Figure 10-19 is a reminder to both operator and pedestrian. [Pg.164]
