Other proof was obtained from experiments with artificial membranes in which BHT or its glycoside isolated from Bacillus acidocaldarius led to a condensation of C16 0 and abolished the clear phase transition between the gel-like and the liquid-crystalline phases. Furthermore, it was found that 40 mol-% of BHT completely suppresses this phase transition in phospholipid bilayers. [Pg.1622]

Stefan Neumann and Helmut Simon (from the Technical University of Munich) had discovered already in 1986 that the squalene-hopene cyclase from Alicydo-bacillus acidocaldarius [260] carries out the cyclisation, not only of squalene to hopene andhopanol, but also ofhomofarnesolto A/wfcrojc . [261] It may therefore be assumed, that this latter cydisation proceeds in a very similar way as in case of squalene. [Pg.157]

Bacillus acidocaldarius has been shown to produce an inducible thermo-acidophilic (x-amylase during the stationary phase of growth in the presence of (1 -> 4)-linked a-o-glucans. The enzyme fractions purified from both the culture medium and the cells were identical. The a-amylase (mol. wt. 6.8 x lOS pH optimum 3.5, temperature optimum 75 °C) was shown to comprise a single polypeptide chain and to be stable at acidic pH. [Pg.434]

A novel glycolipid (12) isolated from the extreme thermoacidophile Bacillus acidocaldarius is a 2-acylamino-2-deoxy-j3-D-glucopyranosyl derivative of 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroxypentane linked to hopane (a pentacyclic triterpene) at C-29. Three other glycolipids possess a common structure (13) having the hydroxy-groups of their glycerol residues unsubstituted, or monoacylated, or diacylated. [Pg.424]

The NADH dehydrogenase isolated from the archaebacterium Sulfolobus acidocaldarius is specific for NADH and reduces certain quinones, ferricyanide and 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol [148]. The actual pH optimum of the enzyme was dependent upon the electron acceptor used, being considerably lower for ferricyanide (4.5) than for 2,6-dichlorophenolindophenol. The membrane enzyme from Bacillus caldotenax had similar properties when solubilized and partially purified, activity being stimulated by membrane lipids and non-ionic detergent [149]. The Bacillus caldovelox" enzyme was more stable in the membrane bound form than when solubilized and the addition of membrane lipids to the soluble enzyme preparation resulted in restoration of thermostability to levels comparable... [Pg.73]
