Axillary Lymphadenopathy

Nearly half of the vaccinees in these studies reported mild pain at the vaccination site, with 2-3% reporting severe pain. Approximately a third of vaccine recipients developed axillary lymphadenopathy, mild in most. In 3-7% of recipients, the lym-phadenopathy was moderate, causing some discomfort, but did not interfere with normal activities (25). 

Side effects arising from vaccination are relatively uncommon but nevertheless finite. Low-grade fever and axillary lymphadenopathy may coincide with the culmination of the cutaneous pox lesion. The attendant erythema and induration of the vaccination vesicle is frequently misdiagnosed as bacterial superinfection. Formation of a scar on healing of the vesicle occurs routinely, and constitutes a permanent record of a take, or a successful primary vaccination.

A 34-year-old woman was given intramuscular sodium aurothiomalate for rheumatoid arthritis after little response to anti-inflammatory drugs (38). After the sixth injection she developed enlarged neck and axillary lymph nodes. Biopsy showed subtotal infarction of a reactive node, confirmed by histochemical, immunohis-tochemical, and molecular techniques. Gold was withdrawn and the lymphadenopathy gradually resolved over the next 2 months. She continued to suffer from rheumatoid arthritis with no evidence of malignant lymphoma after 3 years.
