Automobile paint chip

In forensic science, FTIR microscopy has been used to examine paint chips from automobile accidents. An example of a paint chip spectmm is shown in Fig. 4.29. Hit-and-run drivers frequently leave traces of paint on cars with which they collide. Identification of the paint can help to identify the car. Other uses of an IR microscope in forensic analysis include the examination of hbers, dmgs, and traces of explosives. [Pg.257]

As a representative application example, the analysis of a paint chip of an automobile by using an FT-IR microspectroscopic system equipped with a 64 x 64 two-dimensional MCT array detector is described. A paint chip embedded in an epoxy resin was sectioned using... [Pg.249]

There are libraries containing spectra of paint chips from various automobiles. Performing a library search of a paint chip spectrum can help identify the make and model of a car, and sometimes even the year it was made and the factory where it originated. This type of evidence is useful in tracking down the perpetrator of a crime. Evidence of this type has been used in courts of law to convict people of felonies. [Pg.171]

Two standard reference collections have been constructed and are in the process of being distributed to crime laboratories in the United States. The first is a set of auto paint color chips for 197 domestic vehicles. Each set contains samples of approximately lltO colors plus information concerning the makes and models of automobiles on which each color was used. [Pg.50]

Surfacers are mainly produced from low molecular mass polyester resins cross-linked with amino resins. Blocked polyisocyanate resins may also be used for high stone chip resistance. Water-soluble polyester resins are increasingly used for water-thinnable stoving surfacers. Spray and dip paints based on polyester resins are used to coat automobile accessories (e.g., windscreen wipers, axle parts). [Pg.55]
