Autoimmune diseases myelin disorders

Polyneuritis is a disorder of the peripheral nerves. It involves damage to the myelin sheath. The condition is due to inflammation of the axonal membrane caused by viral or bacterial attack, i.e. an antoimmnne disease. Guillain-Barre syndrome is one form of polynenritis and is an example of an autoimmune disease caused by immune mimicry in response to a bacterial or viral antigen. It is discnssed in Chapter 17. [Pg.323]

Multiple sclerosis is a disorder of the brain and the spinal cord that attacks the myelin sheath of nerve fibres. The cause is unknown but it is presumably an autoimmune disease triggered by an environmental factor. There is a ge-... [Pg.220]

MS is a central nervous system disorder in which myelin is gradually destroyed in patches throughout the brain or spinal cord, or both. This loss of myelin interferes with nerve transmissions and leads to muscular weakness, loss of coordination, numbness, tremors, and speech and vision disturbances. MS is thought to be an autoimmune disease. [Pg.304]

MS is an inflammatory demyelinating autoimmune disease affecting the CNS. In MS, the immune system attacks the myelin sheath of nerve cell fibers in the brain and spinal cord. MS is predominantly a T-lymphocyte mediated disorder, and cytokines may therefore have a key role in the pathogenesis of the disease. MS is the only neurological disorder where therapeutic manipulation of the cytokine system influences development of the disease (Adibhatla and Hatcher,... [Pg.258]

Here, the multiple sclerosis is a disorder of the central nervous system marked by weakness, numbness, a loss of muscle coordination, and problems with vision, speech, and bladder control, and multiple sclerosis is thought to be an autoimmune disease in which the body s immune system destroys myelin that is a substance consist of both protein and fat (lipid), and this myelin is serving as a nerve insulator and helping in the transmission of nerve signals. [Pg.89]
