Authors and Inventors

The field Author (AU) may contain up to ten names of authors for every publication, or inventors names for patents. The field is phrase-indexed, proximity operators cannot be used. The surname comes first and given Christian names and/or initials always follow. 

Names should be retrieved using the EXPAND command. Select file entries with first names and initials. For double-barrelled names the maiden name must be searched too (Fig. 123).

In practicing intellectual property law, one may work to define and protect the intellectual property created by another, or seek to limit the scope of protection claimed by another in order to maintain the unfettered use of subject matter that is already in the public domain or not adequately described in a patent. Thus, one involved in a career involving intellectual property law participates in promoting the progress of science and useful arts by securing for limited times, to authors and inventors, the exclusive right to their respective writings and discoveries. In the field Author (AU) authors and inventors are retrieved. When a search is restricted to the field Inventor (IN), only the inventors themselves can be found. The same is true for the field Corporate Source (CS) It contains names of companies, institutions and patent assignees, the field Patent Assignee (PA) contains only patent assignees. 

Munroe, Charles Edward (1849—1938). Leader in the development of expls in the USA.
