More specific data are available for two main countries, namely the United States and Australia. Fatalities are difficult to compare with the British figures as Federal Railroad Administration data and Australian National Occupational Health and Safety Commission data only give absolute numbers. The total number of worker fatalities on American railroads was 33 in 1996 and 37 in 1997 (Federal Railroad Administration, 1998) and the absolute number of worker fatalities on Australian railways during 1996/7 was 4 ( National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, 1998). [Pg.53]

The Australia inventory is the Australian Inventory of Chemical Substances (AICS).1516 It was established for the purpose of implementing the Industrial Chemicals (Notification and Assessment) Act 1989. The National Industrial Chemicals Notification and Assessment Scheme (NICNAS) operates under the Act for the notification and assessment of industrial chemicals and is administered by the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission (NOHSC). The list contains over 40,000 substances which gets added to regularly. [Pg.674]
