The number of general accounts of the Civil War is legion and, it would seem, growing daily. Of those, a few stand out. For years the classic treatment was James Ford Rhodes History of the United States from the Compromise of1850 to the Final Restoration of Home Rule at the South in 1877, 1 volumes (New York Macmillan, 1906-1907). For the present study, however, two titles have been especially helpful in giving much-needed context to the military and political events of the Civil War. They were Allan Nevins War for the Union, 4 volumes (1971 reprinted, New York Konecky and Konecky, 2000) and James M. McPherson s Battle Cry of Freedom The Civil War Era (New York Oxford University Press, 1988). Other helpful books have been Richard E. Beringer et al., the South Lost the Civil War (Athens The University of Georgia Press, 1986) Jay Winik, April 1865 The Month That Saved America (New York Perennial, 2001) and William C. Davis, Look Away A History of the Confederate States of America (New York The Free Press, 2002). [Pg.343]

ScienceDaily. Most TV Prescription Drug Ads Minimize Risk Information, Study Finds. Available online. URL http //www.sciencedaily.com/re-leases/2008/01/080103161527.htm. Posted January 4, 2008. This article summarizes a study coming from the University of Georgia, Athens. The study finds that ads fail to provide balanced information, particularly concerning the risks of side effects. With a few exceptions, the ads did not violate the minimum requirements of the law but still failed to give consumers the information they need to make fully informed decisions about the use of a prescription drug. [Pg.191]

The center of Greek philosophy shifted to Athens around 400 B.C.E., with the rise of Plato and his school, the Academy. Plato (428-347 B.C.E.) was an Athenian from a wealthy, patrician family. He had been the foremost pupil of Socrates (470-399 b.c.e.), but, unlike his teacher, he did not reject the necessity of understanding the physical world. For Socrates, only the Ideal and the nature of man were worthy of study. The Ideal was perfect, mathematical, and divine. Although Plato accepted the superiority of the Ideal over the material, he was also interested in human existence, writing extensively about politics and social organization. It followed that even if the material world might be an imperfect reflection of the Ideal, to make the best of one s life a person needed to understand both the material world and the Ideal. The best presentation of Plato s ideas is found in the Timaeus, which includes a description of the structure of the universe. [Pg.13]

The present book is the culmination of seven years of teaching process control at the University of Minnesota and the National Technical University of Athens. It was designed in such a way as to provide a simple, smooth, and readable account of process control aspects, while providing the interested reader with material, problems, and directions for further study. [Pg.9]

Nicholas A. Peppas, a native of Greece, studied chemical engineeringrat N.T.U., Athens (Dipl. Eng., 1971) and at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, from which he received his Sc.D. in 1973. He joined Purdue University in 1976 where he is currently Professor of Chemical Engineering. He is a member of the editorial boards of Biomaterials and the Journal of Applied Polymer Science. He has coauthored more than 90 publications in his areas of research interest, which include diffusion in polymers, polymer network structures, membrane science, and biointerfacial phenomena. In 1982-83 he will be Zyma Foundation Visiting Professor at the University of Geneva, Switzerland. [Pg.7]

Zervas, Leonidas, 1902-1980 (p. 46, Plate 55) was born in Megapolis in the Peloponese, Greece. He studied chemistry at the University of Athens and then in Berlin where, in 1926, he received his Ph.D. [Pg.274]
