Newcomen engines continued to operate, especially in collieries, almost to the end of the eighteenth centuiy. Yet they, too, were wasteful. The way was open for a great advance, James Watt s invention in 1768 of the sepai atc condenser. Next to the driving cylinder stood another cylinder, exhausted and permanently cold. When the inoincnt for the down-stroke came, a valve opened, the steam rushed over and condensed the valve then closed and the cycle was repeated. The driving cylinder stayed permanently hot. 

While each container manufacturer has developed proprietary tests, most are based on electrochemical techniques. Corrosion in enameled ETP or TFS cans can be evaluated using one of the available procedures (28, 29, 30). Corrosion performance of plain tinplate cans can be estimated using the Progressive ATC Test developed by Kamm (6, 7). These tests should speed the development of new containers.

A qualitatively new result appears in the opposite limit when broadening is adiabatic (Atc 1). In this case only the resolved spectrum is worthy of discussion but in the vicinity of P and R lines the broadening is almost the same as before (Fig. 4.5).
