The climate of the Nile Valley was stable and predictable prior to the construction of the Aswan high dam. Although the effects of annual inundations were removed with the construction of the dam, the ensuing climatic changes ushered in a new set of phenomena that threaten the Nile Basin and its people, from Alexandria to Aswan. Our investigations (to be published) indicate that, because of overall increased irrigation, this threat now extends as far south as Khartoum. 

The Hoover Dam site on the Colorado River between Arizona and Nevada and the Aswan Dam site on the Nile River in Egypt are examples of good locations for the harvesting of hydropower. Today, most of the good sites for hydropower are already developed. In most places, there is little hope for further significant expansion of this energy source. Rift Valley fever is also transmitted by mosquitoes of the Aedes family, and an epidemic, in the early 1970s, in Egypt affected more than 200,000 people, with 600 deaths. On this occasion, the precipitating event was the construction of the Aswan dam, with the associated increase in water available for mosquito-breeding areas. 

This process has been known for many decades, but has been employed chiefiv to produce high-purity hydrogen for the food industry. Today, the generation of electricity of nuclear and hydroelectric origin, and the existence of surplus capacity available in off-peak hours, have revived interest in- this process for the massive production of hydrogen (Aswan plant in Egypt). The alternatives available include the following ... 

The more northerly of the two is the famous singing Memnon this statue was repaired by the Emperor Septimius Severus in Roman times. Heizer and eoworkers analyzed the stone of the two statues and also that used in the repaired section, by NA A. The results indicated that the sandstone used in the original statues was quarried at Gebel el Ahmar, near Cairo, 676 km down the Nile, while the stone used in the Roman repair came from nearer quarries at Aswan and Edfii, upstream.
