The most advanced projects are (i) at the abandoned Asse salt mine in Germany, wiiere drums with low and intermediate level activities have been deposited at 300 m depth in 1967-78 the repository is now used for research a final repository in salt at Gorleben is planned to be in operation be the year 2010, (ii) the waste isolation pilot plant (WIPP) at... 

In order to test various sealing designs as technical barriers in a repository in salt formations, a test site was build at the 945-m level in the Asse salt mine. Although the dam construction was stopped prematurely, this test site gave opportunity to monitor acoustic emission during drifting of two galleries. 

May be, time is not yet ripe for my proposal. On the other hand there exists a long and very successful history with regard to international cooperation in the area of research and development. There is quite a number of bi-, tri- or multilateral contracts for cooperation. Underground researdi laboratories were and are used commonly by several nations. You all know the names, like Asse salt mine, Stripa project, Felslabor Grimsel, URL near Pinawa, Aspo Hard Rock Laboratory, Just to mention a few. International exchange of results and free, open technical discussions are well established in oiu field.
