Asphalts unknown

Moisture Aims are frequently found under unbonded protective coatings of asphalt and plastic tapes. The nature and origin of this water is still unknown but is of great interest because of its relationship to bond failure, microbial utilisation of asphalt and hydrocarbons, and efficiency of cathodic protection. ... [Pg.386]

A device was found in 1936 near what is now modem Baghdad, the capital of Iraq. It consisted of a copper cylinder housing a central iron rod. The identity of the ionic electrolyte is now wholly unknown. The device was held together with asphalt as glue. [Pg.345]

The soil cleanup system (SCS) is a rotary kiln modified asphalt recycling unit for treatment of gasoline- and diesel-fuel-contaminated soils. This technology has been used in at least two full-scale demonstrations however, its commercial availability is unknown because RIMS was unable to contact the vendor. The asphalt recycling unit was originally developed by Robert L. Mendenhall, a Las Vegas, Nevada, contractor who had successfully recycled asphalt for a number of years. [Pg.514]

These few examples show the desperate need for further research and assessment in the chemistry and all aspects of air pollution. One might question whether we have knowledge of all urban sources of hydrocarbons that are important to atmospheric interactions. Does all rubber dust from automotive tires remain as dust What is the contribution of asphalt roadways to atmospheric hydrocarbons Is the contribution from such unassessed and other unknown anthropogenic sources sufficient in itself to account for health-damaging levels of ozone These and other questions require immediate attention if we are to realize the goal of effective pollution control. [Pg.18]

Recent experience suggests that the use of a SRD, intentional or unintentional, is a plausible scenario. One potential SRD source is radioactive Cesium ( Cs), which has many industrial and medical uses. Industry uses Cs in highway construction in devices that measure the density of asphalt. In the Southeast United States, several of these devices have been missing or stolen, with their location unknown (1). The 1987 incident in Goiania, Brazil occurred after thieves stole a Cs therapy source, still contained in its shielding, from a hospital, and sold it for scrap metal. Other involved individuals then broke up the source and shared it. None of the people involved was aware that the device was harmful, and authorities did not detect the incident for 15 days. By that time (1) ... [Pg.160]
