Arts and Crafts

Those engaged in arts and crafts activities use many different toxic chemicals. Table 11.1 contains a partial list of arts and crafts materials that contain toxic chemicals. [Pg.158]

Toxic chemicals commonly contained in arts and crafts materials are listed in Table 11.2.  [Pg.158]

Most of the chemicals in Table 11.2 target the respiratory system and CNS. Exposures in arts and crafts use are almost always to mixtures of lipophilic and hydrophilic chemicals. When used in areas with poor air circulation (as is often the case in home use) the result can be unexpected acute toxicity. For example, it has been reported that exposure to formaldehyde and terpene hydrocarbons at very low levels unexpectedly produced dyspnea and other lower-lung symptoms in wood workers. The effects could not be attributed to either the formaldehyde or the terpenes alone at low levels of exposure In another example, it was reported that chronic exposure to a combination of very low concentrations of MEK, ethyl acetate, and aliphatic hydrocarbons in a leather adhesive formulation induced unanticipated CNS effects. Some products that are considered by most [Pg.158]

Not for a while, I guess. Takes time to publicize, says Mark coolly. Not every day a fourteenth-century chantry ruin with attached Arts and Crafts country house comes on the market. After all, why should he be feeling anything It was all a very long time ago, as Grandmama used to say when I asked about her brother who died in the Great War. [Pg.182]

He takes my hand. I sometimes used to wonder what Kay would have done, if he d lived what having him here would have made the family into. He was so clear—so absolute—about art and craft and how life should be. Izzy reminds me of him very much, sometimes. Though you re the one who looks like him. Especially around the eyes and mouth. . . Mark s a good man. He always was. ... [Pg.233]

Chloroform (CH2C12) can be purchased over the internet from arts and crafts warehouses. It has a tendency to be harsh on organics and has a boiling range of 35-65°C (95-149° F). Chloroform sinks to the bottom of the jar. [Pg.14]

By the start of the seventeenth century, the stage had been set for transformation in the study of chemistry. Up to this time, chemistry played a central role in the arts and crafts, but as a science, it had made only modest advances from the days of Aristotle. This started to change as individuals adopted a scientific approach and subjected the ideas of Aristotle to experimental testing. By 1700, the walls of unquestioned authority concerning scientific thought had been shattered by individuals such as Galileo, Isaac Newton, and Francis Bacon. The time was now ripe for rapid changes in the study of chemistry. [Pg.16]

A mathematical model is a representation, in mathematical terms, of certain aspects of a nonmathematical system. The arts and crafts of mathematical modeling are exhibited in the construction of models that not only are consistent in themselves and mirror the behavior of their prototype, but also serve some exterior purpose. [Pg.3]

This time, we will use more then one anode, to carryout a double reactiou In this example, we will make ferric chloride hydrate by using an iron anode, and a graphite anode. The graphite anode should be 8 to 12 inches long, by at least A inch in diameter. Note these graphite rods can be obtained from numerous arts and craft stores. Look for arts and crafts stores that sell drawing freehand accessories. Graphite is a form of carbon, and is commonly called "pencil lead". [Pg.102]

Although we have shown a number of micrographs, it is beyond the scope of this treatment to discuss the details of experimental methodology and the tremendous art and craft that sometimes goes into sample preparation.
