Artemisia afra Jacq. ex Willd. [umhlonyane, wild wormwood] (Asteraceae) leaf infusion is used for cough and the leaf decoction is for stomachache (26,11). The leaf contains alkaloids, flavonoids, glycosides, polyphenols, saponins, steroids and tannins (15) and volatile terpenes. The essential oil is recognized to have antimicrobial properties (52). The essential oil is responsible for the effectiveness in cough. [Pg.41]

Artemisia afra Willd. (African wormweed) The major components in A. afra oil (1.5%) from semi-dried leaves were 1,8-cineole (67%), terpinen-4-ol (7%) and bomeol (5%) (39). The oil from Zimbabwe contains mainly artemesia ketone (6.3-41.9%) and 1,8-cineole (0.1-27.9%) (40). In East Africa the aerial parts of A. afra are used to treat indigestion as well as sore throats and fever in children. The roots are used for treating intestinal worms and the leaves are chewed as emetic (35). In South Africa fumes from boiled leaves are inhaled for blocked nasal passages (41). [Pg.498]

Asteraceae(Compositae) Artemisia afra Willd. (African wormweed) Fifi (Shambaa), Ushemeli (Sukuma) A,L Heated aerial parts are fermented and used to treat sore throats and fever in children. Aerial parts are taken by adults for treating indigestion. A decoction of boiled roots is taken two to three times daily for treatment of intestinal worms. For emetic action, the leaves are chewed and the juice swallowed (35)... [Pg.516]

Metabolomics techniques can also be used as a quality control for complex natural products mixtures. Recently, NMR combined with PCA statistical clustering was applied to monitor the quality of claimed antimalarial herbal remedies. The authors demonstrate that the products incorporating Artemisia afra or A. annua could be distinguished and that the bioactive artemisinin was an important discriminant factor.40... [Pg.603]

The roots of the S. African species Artemisia afra have been examined by Bohlmann and Zdero, and shown to contain the known acetylenes (8), (10), (II), (12), and (13). This study established that Artemisia afra is chemically related to the European Artemisia species, but among sixty species of Artemisia previously examined, the acetylenes (8) and (10)— (13) have never before been found together. The roots of Artemisia... [Pg.214]
