Aromatic hydrocarbons adsorbed

We postulated a reaction mechanism with participation of an aromatic radical cation which was formed by one electron transfer from an aromatic hydrocarbon to copper(II) chloride. Activated alumina has electron-acceptor properties, and formation of a radical cation of an aromatic hydrocarbon adsorbed on alumina has been observed by ESR (ref. 13). Therefore, it seemed to us that alumina as a support facilitates the generation of the radical cation of the aromatic hydrocarbon. 

The phosphorescence lifetimes for the p-aminobenzoic acid anion adsorbed on sodium acetate as a function of temperature were evaluated in a manner similar to the one discussed by Oelkrug and coworkers (,28-30) for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adsorbed on y-alumina. In general, the solid-surface phosphorescence lifetime cutrves for the anion of p-aminobenzoic acid followed Equation 2.

Photochemical transformation of benzole (e)pyrene (BeP), a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon, adsorbed on silica gel and alumina surfaces, is reported by Fioressi and Arce (2005). This study was designed to define the atmospheric degradation of the PAH adsorbed on particulates that originated from wind erosion of the land surface. It can be assumed that similar behavior occurs at the land surface-atmosphere interface.

The reaction does not have preparative significance. However, it has been surmised that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adsorbed on atmospheric particulate matter can become activated as a result of atmospheric oxidation. Samples of such materials could display a degree of mutagenicity not associated with inactivated hydrocarbons. Although in many cases the precise nature of the oxidant is not clear, Pitts et al.60 have been able to show that ozone can convert benzo[a] pyrene, adsorbed on a glass filter, to its 4,5-oxide (28).

In this method a 1L sample of water is extracted three times with 30mL of cyclohexane. The combined organic phase is concentrated in a vacuum rotary evaporator to a volume of about 0.5mL and filtered through alumina, activity II. The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adsorbed to the alumina are eluted with 3mL of cyclohexane-benzene (1 1 v/v) and evaporated to dryness. 

The aj values for various functional groups of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. Adsorbent /J-Bondapak Cig, methanol-water (65 35) eluent, ambient temperature...
