Ketones, from aromatic compounds

The solvent extracts can be cleaned up by traditional column chromatography or by solid-phase extraction cartridges. This is a common cleanup method that is widely used in biological, clinical, and environmental sample preparation. More details are presented in Chapter 2. Some examples include the cleanup of pesticide residues and chlorinated hydrocarbons, the separation of nitrogen compounds from hydrocarbons, the separation of aromatic compounds from an aliphatic-aromatic mixture, and similar applications for use with fats, oils, and waxes. This approach provides efficient cleanup of steroids, esters, ketones, glycerides, alkaloids, and carbohydrates as well. Cations, anions, metals, and inorganic compounds are also candidates for this method [7],... 

Numerous studies have shown that low hydrogen overpotential electrically conducting catalysts (e.g., Raney nickel, platinum and palladium on carbon powder, and Devarda copper) can be used to electrocatalyticaUy hydrogenate a variety of organic compounds including benzene and multiring aromatic compounds, phenol, ketones, nitro compounds, dinitriles, and glucose [45, 46, 54, 55, 67-71]. These reactions have been carried out in both batch and semicontinuous flow reactors in most cases, the reaction products were similar to those obtained from a traditional chemical catalytic scheme at elevated temperatures and pressures. 

The aromatic compound raspberry ketone, 4-(/ -hydroxyphenyl)-2-butanone, also known disframbinone, has been identified as the main fiavor impact component of raspberries, where it is contained in very low concentrations (0.1-0.2 ppm), only during the late maturation stage of the berry [140]. The biosynthetic pathway (shown in Scheme 9.6) stems from the general phenylpropanoid metabolism, starting from/)-coumaroyl-Co A and malonyl-CoA, involving at least two different enzymes (a synthase and a reductase) [141].

Two classes of charged radicals derived from ketones have been well studied. Ketyls are radical anions formed by one-electron reduction of carbonyl compounds. The formation of the benzophenone radical anion by reduction with sodium metal is an example. This radical anion is deep blue in color and is veiy reactive toward both oxygen and protons. Many detailed studies on the structure and spectral properties of this and related radical anions have been carried out. A common chemical reaction of the ketyl radicals is coupling to form a diamagnetic dianion. This occurs reversibly for simple aromatic ketyls. The dimerization is promoted by protonation of one or both of the ketyls because the electrostatic repulsion is then removed. The coupling process leads to reductive dimerization of carbonyl compounds, a reaction that will be discussed in detail in Section 5.5.3 of Part B. 

Friedel-Crafts acylation reactions usually involve the interaction of an aromatic compound with an acyl halide or anhydride in the presence of a catalyst, to form a carbon-carbon bond [74, 75]. As the product of an acylation reaction is less reactive than its starting material, monoacylation usually occurs. The catalyst in the reaction is not a true catalyst, as it is often (but not always) required in stoichiometric quantities. For Friedel-Crafts acylation reactions in chloroaluminate(III) ionic liquids or molten salts, the ketone product of an acylation reaction forms a strong complex with the ionic liquid, and separation of the product from the ionic liquid can be extremely difficult. The products are usually isolated by quenching the ionic liquid in water. Current research is moving towards finding genuine catalysts for this reaction, some of which are described in this section. 

Notable examples of general synthetic procedures in Volume 47 include the synthesis of aromatic aldehydes (from dichloro-methyl methyl ether), aliphatic aldehydes (from alkyl halides and trimethylamine oxide and by oxidation of alcohols using dimethyl sulfoxide, dicyclohexylcarbodiimide, and pyridinum trifluoro-acetate the latter method is particularly useful since the conditions are so mild), carbethoxycycloalkanones (from sodium hydride, diethyl carbonate, and the cycloalkanone), m-dialkylbenzenes (from the />-isomer by isomerization with hydrogen fluoride and boron trifluoride), and the deamination of amines (by conversion to the nitrosoamide and thermolysis to the ester). Other general methods are represented by the synthesis of 1 J-difluoroolefins (from sodium chlorodifluoroacetate, triphenyl phosphine, and an aldehyde or ketone), the nitration of aromatic rings (with ni-tronium tetrafluoroborate), the reductive methylation of aromatic nitro compounds (with formaldehyde and hydrogen), the synthesis of dialkyl ketones (from carboxylic acids and iron powder), and the preparation of 1-substituted cyclopropanols (from the condensation of a 1,3-dichloro-2-propanol derivative and ethyl-...
