Hypochlorite reactions with aromatic amines

The following oxidants were reported to give colour reactions with aromatic amines, which may be used for identification purposes under controlled conditions chloric acid , ammonium persulphate-silver nitrate , benzoyl peroxideand sodium hypochlorite . Amines with partial structures 26 and 27, where R, R = H, alkyl, give the haloform reaction with hypochlorites in basic media . [Pg.467]

This route to the a-nitroso derivatives of the 7r-deficient heterocycles has permitted an exploration of their chemistry. They are extremely reactive and condense readily with 1,3-dienes to give 3,6-dihydro-l,2-oxazines (e.g. 99), and with aromatic amines in the presence of acid to give azo compounds (Scheme 86). This latter reaction is particularly useful in view of the instability of the corresponding 2-pyridinediazonium salts referred to above, which limits conventional access. The a-nitroso heterocycles are oxidized by ozone or sodium hypochlorite to the a-nitro compounds (Scheme 86) (82JOC553). [Pg.344]

Hofmann established a route to higher homologues of aromatic amines by intramolecular rearrangement of /V-alkylated anilines, a reaction that was of great theoretical and technical importance. In 1870, he reported the conversion of an acid amide into an amine, with loss of one carbon. In 1881, he discovered that when the degradation was carried out with sodium hypochlorite or hypobromite, the yields of primary amines were excellent. This is the Hofmann degradation, or reaction, that takes place via formation of isocyanate60. [Pg.32]

Like 2-aminopyridines and 2-aminopyrimidine, 2-aminopyrazine (39) (Scheme 29) has been converted into the nitroso compound (121) by reaction with dimethyl sulfide and NCS followed by deprotonation of the resulting sulfonium salt with sodium methoxide to the 5, 5-dimethylsulfilimine and then oxidation with MCPBA <82JOC552>. The extremely reactive nitrosopyrazine (121) condenses with 1,3-dienes to give 3,6-dihydro-1,2-oxazines and with aromatic amines in the presence of acid to gives azo compounds, and is smoothly oxidized with ozone or sodium hypochlorite to 2-nitropyrazine (122). Methyl 3-aminopyrazinecarboxylate reacts with thiophosgene to produce the... [Pg.261]

By treatment of an amide with sodium hypobromite or sodium hypochlorite solution (or with halogen admixed with aqueous alkali), a primary amine having one less carbon atom is produced. Good yields are obtained when the reaction is applied to most aliphatic and aromatic amides. Examples are provided by the preparation of anthranilic acid and 3-aminopyridine (Expt 6.53). [Pg.783]

The use of azides in the Curtius reaction is hazardous and the utility of the Hoffman and Lossen rearrangements is limited to preparation of aliphatic isocyanates, as aqueous media are employed (aromatic isocyanates react readily with water to form substituted ureas). Tertiary butyl hypochlorite can be used for non-aqueous Hoffman rearrangements but is costly. In practice mostly phosgenation of a primary amine is commercially important ... [Pg.8]

Reaction at Sulphur.—The oxidation of benzo[6]thiophens to sulphoxides by t-butyl hypochlorite has been studied. In the presence of a ruthenium catalyst, dibenzothiophen was oxidized by oxygen to the sulphone. The reactions of benzo[ >]thiophen 1,1-dioxides with various reagents such as amines, amino-alcohols,3-aminopropylsilanes, and aromatic sulphonyl chlorides have been studied. Four detailed papers on the reaction of dibenzophenonium salts with aryl-lithiums have appeared in which the mechanism of ligand exchange was elucidated. " ... [Pg.287]
