Arno River

Juveniles (elvers) of the European eel [Anguilla anguilla) migrate upstream in rivers. To test whether they might follow conspecific odors, elvers were taken from the Arno river in Italy and exposed to water in which other juvenile eels had lived for 8 months. They were attracted to this stimulus much more than to uncontaminated water or water from mosquito fish (Pesaro et ah, 1981). [Pg.142]

Major floods that occur in historical times can be exceeded centuries later Florence, Italy, was devastated on November 4, 1333, when the Arno River flooded the city to depths of 14 feet. Almost 633 years to the day, on November 3,1966, another flood occurred, covering the city with depths of 20 feet. [Pg.766]

For the Tyrrhenian estuaries, which belong the the practically non-tidal Mediterranean Sea, it has been shown, that the overwhelming part of the fluvial heavy metal freight is sedimentated in the estuarine zone and consequently the fluvial heavy metal input to the Mediterranean Sea by Arno, Tiber and the smaller rivers remains insignificant[45]. An example from this study is shown in Figure 7. When present studies in progress for the Rhone and Ehro[46] estuaries have been completed, a relevant basis will exist to assess the relative significance of fluvial and aeolian input of ecotoxic metals into the western Mediterranean Sea. [Pg.132]

Fig. 7. Concentration regulation of lead in the dissolved and particulate phase in the Arno Estuary as function of the salinity and season. Peak in riverine part indicates resuspension and redissolution effects. Common Pb-levels at begin of sea water region (38 /oo salinity), 500 m seawards from river mouth correspond to coastal water Pb-levels[27] and indicate almost complete sedimentation of fluvial Pb-freight in estuarine zone. [Pg.133]
