Armed approach

Only at a sufficiently high polymer concentration, when the dimensions of the arms approach those of individual linear chains in a semidilute solution at the same concentration, do the star coronae become fully interpenetrated and the correlation peak in the scattering curves disappears. In this concentration regime, the thermodynamic properties of the solution of branched macromolecules become similar to those of linear chains. [Pg.10]

Note also that in Eq. (2.7.8) we accounted only for configurations that are favorable for HBing. In a more realistic function, one might add another eight terms to (2.7.8) to account for the electrostatic repulsion whenever two donors or two acceptor arms approach each other. In some of our order-of-magnitude estimates presented in this and in the next chapter, we shall not need any detailed description of the potential function, and we can also ignore the distinction between a donor and an acceptor arm. [Pg.241]

Lever arms (Figure Ic) are proposed to increase the efficiency of damping devices by magnifying the inter-story drifts and drift velocities, transferred from the structure to dampers (Gluck, 1996). This idea was further developed for design of structures with optimal viscous dampers (Ribakov, 2000). The equivalent lever arm approach is used to change the effect of off the shelf linear viscous devices yielding an optimal passive control system. [Pg.241]

If the output of the photomultiplier is displayed on an oscilloscope, the sinusoidal envelope which contains a high frequency sinusoidal modulation is observed and as the path lengths of the two arms approach equality, the modulation depth of the higher frequency sinusoidal modulation in the envelope increases. If the interferometer is adjusted to produce a maximum modulation depth, zero path difference has been located. If a white light is then used to illuminate the interferometer, the photomultiplier should detect the expected eight to ten fringes and present the typical interferogram of a broadband source. Fig, 3. [Pg.166]

In the latter case, one end of the glycol is protected as its tetrahydropyranyl ether. Upon hydrolysis, a two-armed crown is revealed which may then be treated with the bis-crown precursor identified above. The result will be a tris-crown system and the approach is illustrated below in Eq. (3.35). [Pg.38]

In 1980, a Merck group disclosed the results of a model study which amply demonstrated the efficiency with which the strained bicyclic ring system of thienamycin can be constructed by the carbene insertion cyclization strategy.12 Armed with this important precedent, Merck s process division developed and reported, in the same year, an alternative route to carbene precursor 4.13 Although this alternative approach suffers from the fact that it provides key intermediate 4, and ultimately thienamycin, in racemic form, it is very practical and is amenable to commercial scale production. The details of this interesting route are presented in Schemes 4-6. [Pg.256]

The generic features of these approaches are known from experience in anionic polymerization. However, radical polymerization brings some issues and some advantages. Combinations of strategies (a-d) are also known. Following star formation and with appropriate experimental design to ensure dormant chain end functionality is retained, the arms may be chain extended to give star block copolymers (321). In other cases the dormant functionality can be retained in the core in a manner that allows synthesis of mikto-arm stars (324). [Pg.549]

In the arm-first approach the arms are prepared and then self-assembled to form the core. There are two main variants that will be considered. [Pg.554]

The arm-first synthesis of star microgels by initiating polymerization or copolymerization of a divinyl monomer such as diviny lbenzene or a bis-maleimide with a polystyryl alkoxyamine was pioneered by Solomon and coworkers.692 693 The general approach had previously been used in anionic polymerization. The method has now been exploited in conjunction with NMP,692 6 ATRP69 700 and RAFT.449 701 702 The product contains dormant functionality in the core. This can be used as a core for subsequent polymerization of a monoene monomer to yield a mikto-arm star (NMP ATRP704). [Pg.555]

Miniaturized catheter-type ISE sensors, such as the implantable probe shown in Figure 5-20 represent the preferred approach for routine clinical in-vivo monitoring of blood electrolytes. For these intravascular measurements the reference electrode is placed outside die artery (in die external arm of die catheter), tints obviating biocompatability and drift problems associated with its direct contact with the blood. [Pg.164]
