Scientists are forever searching for electronic components like transistors that will perform their function with minimum production of heat. In early versions of personal computers the heat produced by the components could not be dissipated by natural means and fans were used to force the heat to the surroundings. Most contemporary personal computers, including laptops, rely on removing heat by natural means and do not require fans.

We often hear it said that diamonds are forever . There was even a James Bond novel and film with this title. Under most conditions, a diamond will indeed last forever, or as near for ever as makes no difference. But is it an absolute statement of fact ... 

The argument sounds impressive. But all scientific theories and knowledge are temporary and incomplete descriptions of physical reality they are forever subject to change. Thus, it is at least arguable and perhaps impossible to substantiate whether science stands to advance more efficiently by being overly cautious about errors of the first kind and essentially indifferent to those of the second. 

Nevertheless, certain types of prior knowledge can be introduced within the context of a linear method. Probabilities, signal and noise statistics, power spectra, and the like may be incorporated. Often this type of prior knowledge is difficult to obtain. In any case, it rarely exerts an influence nearly so profound as that of simple bounds on the amplitude of the solution. If the observing spread function obliterates all frequencies beyond the cutoff Q, they are forever lost to the linear restoration methods. No linear filter s...

In 1882, the eminent chemist and historian of chemistry Hermann Kopp published an imaginative 105-page expedition into the world of molecules, Aus der Molecular-Welt, in which he exercised his (and his reader s) "mind s eye" to describe anthropomorphized spectacles that are forever hidden from the bodily eye.
