In 1882, the eminent chemist and historian of chemistry Hermann Kopp published an imaginative 105-page expedition into the world of molecules, Aus der Molecular-Welt, in which he exercised his (and his reader s) "mind s eye" to describe anthropomorphized spectacles that are forever hidden from the bodily eye. In addition to its wry humor, the work is filled with obscure topical and literary allusions, including the epigraph just cited, and hardly any real scientists names can be found anywhere in the book—not even Kopp s own name on the title page. Queen, Knave, Laughter in the Dark, or Despair undergo a distinct process of reworking in Nabokov s self-translations with specific Rnssian references being replaced by allusions to Western culture. Nabokov therefore not only switched languages but also appeared to step out of the Russian literary tradition which relies on its own continuous renewal and reproduction in each new work. Nabokov, as it were, interrupted the chain of Chinese whispers , in which each writer both retains and transforms the voice of his Russian precursors. 

After all fancy speeches have been spoken and all romantic allusions made, it turns out that Chichikov is only a petty predator of the most ordinary sort. Here, the reader cannot fail to be disenchanted with the hero. Gogol emphatically states The very paunchiness and middleagedness of Chichikov does much to spoil his heroic image A pot belly is something that no reader will forgive in a literary hero.. .. ...
