Part 28 Determination of 1,1,1-trimethylolpropane (TMP) in food simulants Aqueous food simulants are saturated with potassium carbonate and extracted with ethanol/ethyl acetate. After evaporation of solvent the extracted TMP is silyated with trimethylsilylimidazole in pyridine and determined by GC with flame ionisation detection... [Pg.602]

Butadiene, CH2=CH-CH=CH2 (CAS No. 106-99-0 PM/Ref. No. 13630) is commonly copolymerized with styrene and acrylonitrile to make ABS or BS food contact plastics (for applications see acrylonitrile). Butadiene is a suspected carcinogen with extreme volatility (bp -4.5 °C) and low water solubility. This makes it very difficult to handle migration and calibration samples where the matrix is of highly aqueous character such as the aqueous food simulants. [Pg.318]

Therefore, the scope of the method seems to be limited only to very short and mild contact conditions in the case of aqueous food simulants, but the method is fully applicable to olive oil and other oils or fats as well as to non-proton-active alternative simulants such as iso-octane. [Pg.321]

The EU limit of the overall migration is 10 mg/dm or 60 mg/kg. Because olive oil is a severe solvent compared with most fatty foods, a reduction factor ranging from 2-5 may be applied depending on the food. Chocolate has, for example, a reduction factor of 5, which means that the value obtained for the overall migration into simulant D must be divided by 5 before checking it against the limit (Directive 85/572/EEC). Eurthermore, it should be kept in mind that analytical error in the determination of the overall migration was determined by the EU as 2 mg/dm or 12 mg/kg for the aqueous food simulants (A, B and C), whilst the error is 3 mg/dm or 20 mg/kg for the fatty food simulant (D). [Pg.97]
