Polyethylene applications

Industrial Applications. Polyethylene oxide)s also have numerous industrial uses. 

Two often used polymers have adequate properties for some applications. Polyethylene terephthalate) (PET) is used to make films and botdes. 

Other virtues include light weight, good electrical and thermal insulation, and in some cases, corrosion resistance, especially where dilute acids and alkalis are concerned. Their low modulus is useful for packaging film applications. Polyethylene comes in several varieties and some of them are quite tough. 

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) is a major thermoplastic used for a multitude of applications. Polyethylene has been manufactured since the early 1950s, but because of its industrial importance, the production of HDPE continues to be very active. New improved catalysts and processes have been developed to produce HDPE with tailored properties at lower manufacturing costs. 

Polypropylene is slowly but surely finding its way into ISBM applications. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) now dominates, being helped by its widespread use in carbonated soft drink bottles up to 3 L in volume. With the incorporation of a good clarifier, the clarity of PP bottles rivals that of PET bottles, but the oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier properties of PET are significantly better than those of PP. The water vapor barrier properties of PP, however, are superior, and new technology promises to improve the oxygen and carbon dioxide barrier properties of PP bottles.

Frequently, MA modified polypropylene is introduced into polypropylene compositions to aid fibre bonding to the matrix [83], which also gives these composites greater resistance to moisture pick-up in processed composites. For outdoor applications, polyethylene is the preferred matrix due to its greater ultraviolet stability than polypropylene. Other methods reported for enhancing fibre-matrix bonding include the use of silane treatments, fatty acids (which also assist processibility) and modification of the fibres by corona discharge, or more speculatively, by acetylation [84, 85].

Polyethylene with a narrow or very narrow MAA7D is used in film, injection molding and rotational molding applications. Polyethylene with a broad MWD is used in HDPE film, sheets, blow molding and pipe applications.
