Application to non-biochemical reactions

The major application of the partition-coefficient parameters has been to biological processes and the simplest major application is to enzyme reactions. Murakami et al. s [79b] work on host-guest interactions is a good example of a non-biological application. Hansch [79a] showed that Murakami et al. s data for the reaction of an imidazolyl group attached to a paracyclophane with 4-nitrophenyl esters (Eqn. 84) correlated with ir (Eqn. 85). [Pg.172]

The possibility that micelle formation was giving rise to the correlation was excluded by carrying out the reaction with ester concentrations below the critical micelle concentration. Probably the hydrophobic affinity of the acyl groups of the ester to the cyclophane grouping assists reaction with the imidazolyl group. [Pg.173]
