In contrast to the biopharmaceuticals discussed thus far (recombinant proteins and gene therapy products), antisense oligonucleotides are manufactured by direct chemical synthesis. Organic synthetic pathways have been developed, optimized and commercialized for some time, as oligonucleotides are widely used reagents in molecular biology.
