Antimony tribromide

According to the second mechanism the polymer and antimony trioxide form a catalytic complex. The halogen flame retardant then reacts with the complex and expels antimony tribromide.

Antimony Tribromide and Triiodide. Antimony(III) bromide [7789-61-9] SbBr, is a colorless, crystalline soHd having a pyramidal dimorphic molecular stmcture and an acicular (a-SbBr ) and a bipyramidal (P-SbBr ) habit. 

Both antimony tribromide and antimony ttiiodide are prepared by reaction of the elements. Their chemistry is similar to that of SbCl in that they readily hydroly2e, form complex haUde ions, and form a wide variety of adducts with ethers, aldehydes, mercaptans, etc. They are soluble in carbon disulfide, acetone, and chloroform. There has been considerable interest in the compounds antimony bromide sulfide [14794-85-5] antimony iodide sulfide [13868-38-1] ISSb, and antimony iodide selenide [15513-79-8] with respect to their soHd-state properties, ferroelectricity, pyroelectricity, photoconduction, and dielectric polarization.

Antimony tribromide and other group VA halides minimize the corrosion rate effectively [1799]. Unfortunately, antimony tribromide is toxic.

Hypovanadic Bromide, vanadium tetrabromide, VBr4, has not hitherto been isolated, but it is of interest to note that a double salt of composition VBr4.SbBr3.7HaO has been obtained by dissolving antimony tribromide and vanadium pentoxide in hydrobromic acid and adding bromine. ... 

Arsenic triiodide also dissolves, the saturated solution at 15° C. having density 3-661. Other soluble halides are potassium bromide, anhydrous ferric and aluminium chlorides 6 and tetramethyl ammonium iodide but the iodides of rubidium, cadmium, manganese and cobalt, also mercuric and stannic iodides, and cobalt and stannic bromides, are insoluble or only very slightly soluble in arsenic tribromide. The liquid also dissolves phosphoryl bromide and, very slightly, ammonium thiocyanate. In the mixed solutions of halides, the components may react chemically (cf. p. 106), but such is not always the case for example, with antimony tribromide a continuous series of solid solutions is formed.7... 

B. Pelletier23 obtained an antimony phosphide by the action of molten antimony on metaphosphoric acid with or without admixed carbon. B. Pelletier, and G. Landgrebe obtained a phosphide by the action of phosphorus on molten antimony, although W. Ramsay and R. W. E. Mclvor could obtain a product with only 1546 per cent, by direct action. The last-named prepared antimony monophosphide, SbP, by the action of phosphorus on a soln. of antimony tribromide in carbon disulphide. M. Ragg could not prepare the monophosphide by this process, nor by the action of phosphine on tartar emetic, or antimony trichloride. The phosphide prepared by the fusion processes is a brittle, white mass with a crystalline fracture the precipitated product is a red powder insoluble in carbon disulphide, ether, and benzene. O. Ruff found that phosphorus reacts with antimony chloride in the presence of aluminium chloride—vide supra, arsenic oxyphosphide.

Antimony in the liquid state dissolves phosphorus giving a brittle mass of metallic appearance. A red amorphous powder has also been made by the action of phosphorus on antimony tribromide dissolved in carbon disulphide.4...
