Most drugs in the pyrimidine series fall into four categories the barbiturates, the sulfonamides, the antimicrobials and the antitumour agents. In addition there are innumerable pyrimidines with diverse biological activities, some of which are in use. 

Carbocyclic nucleoside analogs such eis Aristeromycin (380) have also been isolated from natural sources (Table 40) and have antimicrobial activity. The 4, 5 -dehydro derivative of the latter, namely Neplanocin A, dso heis antitumour activity and heis been synthesized <81CPB597>. 

Widespread reports indicate that, in addition to their anti-inflammatory role, triterpenes have other activities. Triterpenoids have been found to possess cytotoxic, antimicrobial and interesting effects on metabolism. Triterpenoids with antitumour activity include oleanane, lanostane, lupane, friedelane, hopane and quassionoid types. Glycyrrhetinic acid has been described as an antiviral, hypolipidemic and anti-atherosclerotic agent. Cucurbitacins B and E, and oleanolic acid possess a potent protective action on the liver, and ganoderic acid and its derivatives have been shown to be inhibitors of cholesterol biosynthesis. Lanostane derivatives, like suberosol, have also been found to inhibit HIV replication in H9 lymphocytes [1,3]. 

Apart from these hamiful effects of daffodils, several Narcissus extracts have shown antiviral (226-231), antimicrobial (232, 233), cytotoxic (234), antitumour (228-230, 235) and allelopathic (236) activities. 

Substance Y-05460M-A (35) was isolated from a culture of Bacillus sp. 05460M (ref.103). This compound has antimicrobial and antitumour activity. 

It is now recognized that toxic actions of drugs to the myocardium are not exclusive to antitumour and/or the so-called cardiac drugs, and that many other drugs with diverse chemical structures, such as antimicrobials, antimalarials, antihistamines, psychiatric, and gastrointestinal medications, can profoimdly disrupt myocardium function, which at times can be fatal (Tamargo 2000 Haverkamp et al. 2000 Vandenberg et al. 2001).
