Antifee dant

Hordenine (anhaline, eremursine, peyocactine, 4-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-phenol. For formula, data, and occurrence, see j phenylethylamine alkaloids. H. is biosynthesized from phenylalanine or tyrosine via tyramine and N-methyltyramine. H. is a sympathico-mimetic. It has diuretic effects, at higher doses it increases blood pressure, and is generally similar to ephedrine and tyramine. In addition H. is an antifee-dant for locusts. H. is used as a cardiac stimulant of low toxicity and as a disinfectant in cases of dysentery. Lit. Acta Crystallogr., Sect. C 47,1450 (1991) Beilstein EIV 13. 1790 Hager (5.) 5, 708 f. nj. Nat. Chemical ecology The amines are components of the plants chemical defence systems. They have antifee-dant or deterrent effects on many animds. Adapted insects of various taxa (Lepidoptera, grasshoppers, beetles, and greenflies) are able to store and utilize the plant P. a. They use them as protective substances against insect-eating predators and display their inedibility through conspicuous warning colors (aposema-tis). Some Lepidoptera also use plant P. a. as precursors for their pheromones. ... [Pg.534]

C20H24O10, Mr 424.40, mp. 135-137°C, occurs in the bark of willows (Salix spp.) and poplars (Populus spp.). It protects the plants from attack by insects (antifee-dant) S. is an inhibitor of the )8-glucosidase from sweet almonds and kills larvae of the swallowtail Papilio glaucus. ... [Pg.567]

Synthesis of (+)-pinidinol The alkaloid (+)-pinidinol was found in the roots of hemi parasite Pedicula-ris bracteosa. Later on it was also found to occur in needles of the host Parry Picea engelmannii). Pinidinol was found to be present in the needles of other species of Picea (spruce) too. It has been found to have antifee-dant activity against spruce budworm. Pinidinol has... [Pg.1178]
