Nootropics are substances that, especially in the elderly, may have a beneficial effect on cognitive functions without inducing general stimulation. The> are being superseded by a new class of compound, the so-called antidementia drugs. 

The following sections of this chapter concentrate on psychopharmaceuticals in the sense of Table 1.1, Le. antipsychotics. antidepressants, mood stabilizers, anxiolytics and psychostimulants attention also will be paid to hypnotics and antidementia drugs. 

Although there are only few published data with antidementia drugs, the effects of cholinesterase inhibitors in healthy awake volunteers appear to be unspecific. In contrast, the REM-sleep facilitating effect of these compounds appears to be a property not shared by other psychotropic drugs.

In dementia, as in any other CNS disorders, CYP genomics is a very important issue since in practice over 90 % of patients with dementia are daily consumers of psychotropics. Furthermore, some acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (the most prescribed antidementia drugs worldwide) are metabolized via CYP enzymes see Table 3).
