Congestive heart failure treatment may be improved by cautiously adding a /3-blocker to conventional management with ACE-inhibitors and diuretics. Bisoprolol and carvedilol are the preferable /3-blockers, since their beneficial effect has been convincngly demonstrated in appropriate clinical trials. Bisoprolol is a highly selective /8i-blocker. Carvedilol has additional properties to its /8-receptor blocking activity, such as a weak vasodilator component and anti-oxidant activity. The beneficial effect is very likely to be caused by /8i-adrenoceptor blockade. [Pg.326]

The number of studies on the health effects of fullerenes and carbon nanotubes is rapidly increasing. However, the data on their toxicity are often mutually contradictory. For example, the researchers from universities of Rice and Georgia (USA) found that in aqueous fullerene solutions colloidal nano-C particles were formed, which even at low concentration (approximately 2 molecules of fullerene per 108 molecules of water) negatively influence the liver and skin cells [17-19]. The toxicity of this nano-C aqueous dispersion was comparable to that of dioxins. In another smdy, however, it was shown that fullerene had no adverse effects and, on the contrary, had anti-oxidant activity [20]. Solutions of prepared by a variety of methods up to 200 mg/mL were not cytotoxic to a number of cell types [21]. The contradiction between the data of different authors could be explained by different nano-C particles composition and dispersion used in research. [Pg.31]

The wood is valuable as timber. In China, the bark and leaves are used for insecticide, for the treatment of skin diseases, and to heal sores and ulcers. In Korea, the bark is used for the treatment of rheumatisms, cold, and cough. In Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, an infusion of leaves is drunk to promote digestion. The anti-inflammatory property of the plan is confirmed in vitro and thought to be imparted by saponins, including kalopanaxsaponin A and pictoside A, which elicited significant anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant activity in rodents (78-82). What is the dopaminergic activity of kalopanaxsaponin A and pictoside A ... [Pg.119]

Vaccinium myrtillus, commonly known as bilberry fruit, originates mainly from northern and central Europe (Bisset, 1994). This well known plant is rich in flavonoids, the polyphenolic compounds that promote anti-oxidant activity (Bisset, 1994). A study conducted on the antioxidative potential of V. myrtillus showed potent protective action on LDL particles during in vitro copper-mediated oxidation. The study concluded that this extract may be more potent than either ascorbic acid or butylated hydroxy-toluene in the protection of LDL particles from oxidative stress (Mitcheva, 1993 Bisset, 1994). [Pg.314]

The anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive properties of berbamine and tetrandrine were compared. These comparative in vitro studies demonstrated that tetrandrine had significantly greater suppressive effects on adherence, locomotion and 3H-deoxyglucose uptake of neutrophils, as well as the mitogen-induced lymphocyte responses and mixed lymphocyte reactions. In addition, tetrandrine displayed anti-oxidant activity while berbamine did not. However, berbamine showed a significantly greater capacity for inhibition of NK cell cytotoxicity. These results indicated that tetrandrine was superior to berbamine in most aspects of anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive activity [190]. [Pg.122]

Besides anti-oxidant activities, hypolipemic activity was observed from tamarind frait extract in hypercholesterolemic hamsters (76). Treatment of hypercholesterolemic hamsters with tamarind fruit pulp extract (5%) led to a decrease in the levels of serum total cholesterol (50%), non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (73%) and triglyceride (60%), and to an increase of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (61%). [Pg.101]
