Polyphenols anti-oxidant activity

Bao H, Ren H, Endo H, Takagi Y and Hayashi T. 2004. Effects of heating and the addition of seasonings on the anti-mutagenic and anti-oxidative activities of polyphenols. Food Chem 86(4) 517—524. [Pg.293]

Vaccinium myrtillus, commonly known as bilberry fruit, originates mainly from northern and central Europe (Bisset, 1994). This well known plant is rich in flavonoids, the polyphenolic compounds that promote anti-oxidant activity (Bisset, 1994). A study conducted on the antioxidative potential of V. myrtillus showed potent protective action on LDL particles during in vitro copper-mediated oxidation. The study concluded that this extract may be more potent than either ascorbic acid or butylated hydroxy-toluene in the protection of LDL particles from oxidative stress (Mitcheva, 1993 Bisset, 1994). [Pg.314]

Tea polyphenolB. Green tea and black tea contain anti-oxidative constituents with favourable pharmacological properties ( theaflavin), especially catechols and polyphenols, which show anticancer activities in animal experiments. ... [Pg.636]

Documented effects The leaves and the fruit husks are used to make the preparation Juglon. It is used externally to treat skin tuberculosis and Staphylococcus and Streptococcus lesions. It has antimicrobial and anti-inflanunatory actions and is used to heal wounds. Unsaturated fatty acids from the nuts help to prevent arteriosclerosis (Nuraliev 1989). CUnical studies showed that a water extract of the leaves was effective in treating some forms of skin tuberculosis, tuberculosis lymphadenitis, and tnbercnlosis of the larynx (Altimishev 1991). In experiments with mice, extracts of Juglans regia improved glucose tolerance in hypoglycemic activity screens (Neef et al. 1995). In vitro, an extract of the nuts inhibited the oxidation of hnman plasma and low density hpoproteins (Anderson et al. 2001). Polyphenols and tocopherols, isolated from the nuts, exhibited antioxidative properties (Fukudu et al. 2003 Li et al. 2007). [Pg.147]
