Anti-inflammatory drugs definition

Anti-neoplastic activity of UDCA was demonstrated first in the context of ulcerative colitis-associated colorectal carcinogenesis. Subsequently, encouraging (but not definitive) results have been obtained in clinical trials of UDCA for prevention of sporadic colorectal adenoma recurrence, which should prompt further evaluation of UDCA for polyp prevention, particularly given its excellent safety profile compared with other candidate chemoprevention agents such as the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. 

In tests on irradiated skin of guinea pigs, anti-inflammatory compounds reduced the permeability of the dermal vasculature to plasma proteins by up to 30% (Song et al. 1968). However, since drug treatment was administered both before and after irradiation, this study is not definitive proof of the efficacy of these compounds. 

Oral antimicrobial agents sometimes have beneficial effects in inflammatory bowel disease. However, in the absence of any evidence pointing toward a definite microbial cause for the colitis in this patient, a drug that decreases inflammation is indicated. Sulfasalazine has significant anti-inflammatory action, and its oral use results in symptomatic improvement in 50-75% of patients. The drug is also used for its anti-inflammatory effects in rheumatoid arthritis. The answer is (D).
