Intercalation of electroactive polymers such as polyaniline and polypyrrole in mica-type layered silicates leads to metal-insulator nanocomposites. The conductivity of these nanocomposites in the form of films is highly anisotropic, with the in-plane conductivity 10 to 10 times higher than the conductivity in the direction perpendicular to the film. Conductive polymer/oxide bronze nanocomposites have been prepared by intercalating polythiophene in V2O5 layered phase, which is analogous to clays. °° Studies of these composites are expected not only to provide a fundamental understanding of the conduction mechanism in the polymers, but also to lead to diverse electrical and optical properties. [Pg.138]

From this view, the authors have used a new approach called melt extrusion-hot stretching-quenching to prepare two categories of CPC (isotropic and anisotropic CPC) based on in situ microfibril reinforced polymer-polymer composites. This chapter briefly describes our recent work on several conductive in situ microfibrillar reinforced composites via hot stretching. [Pg.438]

Thermal transport in such multiphase materials can be made more efhdent by aligning the nanofiUer in a certain direction. Alignment is understood as a preferred orientation of a fiber or tube (in its longitudinal axes) within a 3D sample. This may provide a great advantage when thermal conductivity enhancement is desired in a preferential direction, which is similar to the case of a pure filler network (Barzic and Barzic 2015). Fillers with anisotropic shape, such as CNTs or CNFs, can be oriented in polymer composites by processing, CNT arrays, or by external force. [Pg.207]

SECTION III A NOTE ON GRADIENTLY ANISOTROPIC CONDUCTING AND MAGNETIC POLYMER COMPOSITES... [Pg.115]

In the past decade, nanoscale particles with excellent electrical properties and anisotropic dimensions, such as carbon nanotubes and metallic nanowires, have sparked considerable interest in the field of polymer composites. The high conductivity and unique geometry of these nanoparticles can increase the electrical conductivity of typical engineering polymers by S cm at very low filler concentrations (< 1 vol.%). Realizing the full commercial potential of these novel materials hinges upon our ability to produce composites with well-defined and controllable properties. This, in turn, requires an in-depth understanding of the stmcture-property relations for the electrical properties of polymer nanocomposites. [Pg.327]
