Animal Species Used as Sources of Metabolic Activating Enzymes

Animal Species Used as Sources of Metabolic Activating Enzymes [Pg.43]

Male rats of the Sprague-Dawley strain have usually been used as a source of metabolic activating enzymes, as described by Ames et Rats [Pg.43]

Generally speaking, no marked difference has been found in the preparation of S-9 Mix from these different species of rodents. However, phenacetin, which has been suspected of producing human cancer, is mutagenic only with S-9 Mix from the liver of hamsters treated with polychlorinated biphenyls [Pg.43]

S-9 Mix from monkey was also useful for extrapolating results in rodents to those in humans. Experiments using human S-9 Mix have also been reported. Results using human S-9 Mix are very important in assess- [Pg.43]

It can be stated that S-9 Mix from rats treated with an appropriate inducer is suitable for general purposes and that S-9 from hamsters is also effective. Human S-9 is suitable for testing the mutagenicities of chemicals on human beings in particular. [Pg.43]
