Multiple sclerosis animal models

Multiple sclerosis (MS) 4. In rats with EAE, an animal model of multiple sclerosis, AEA and 2-AG levels are decreased in the striatum and midbrain. This might be associated with motor impairment 4. Inhibitors of degradation (both FAAH and cellular re-uptake)... [Pg.467]

Some aspects of multiple sclerosis are reflected in the animal model experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis, which is induced by immunization of susceptible animals with appropriate encephalogenic proteins or peptides. In these animals, if cultured adult stem cell neurospheres are injected into the bloodstream, injected cells can find their way to damaged portions of the nervous system and improve function in mice. How the injected cells augmented the recovery process is unclear. One possibility is that cells recruited to the lesions differentiated into oligodendrocytes and generated new myelin sheaths, but this seems unlikely in the face of ongoing cellular destruction. [Pg.512]

Vice versa, the disease may affect the immunogenicity of biopharmaceuticals. For instance, the activated immune system in diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and inflammatory bowel disease is likely to produce a faster and/or stronger response to biopharmaceuticals. Inasmuch as this applies to patients, the same issue may have relevance for safety testing that is, application of a relevant inflammatory disease model may give greater insight and better predictability than healthy animals do. [Pg.304]

Inhibition of Rho GTPases with protein pre-nyltransferase inhibitors prevents leukocyte recruitment to the central nervous system and attenuates clinical signs of disease in an animal model of multiple sclerosis. The role of ac tivated microglia in neuronal survival during inflammatory conditions has been extensively studied in the models of experimental allergic/autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) and in the animal model of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) (Antel and Owens, 1999 Becher etal., 2000 Biemacki etal., 2005 Jack et al., 2005). A rapid recruitment of blood-borne monocytes, an... [Pg.97]

EAE experimental allergic/autoimmune encephalitis is an animal model for demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. It is induced by injection of myelin basic protein or whole CNS tissue together with adjuvants. [Pg.774]
