Anhydrides amphoteric

Berzehus (19) further appHed and amplified the nomenclature introduced by Guyton de Morveau and Lavoisier. It was he who divided the elements into metalloids (nonmetals) and metals according to their electrochemical character, and the compounds of oxygen with positive elements (metals) into suboxides, oxides, and peroxides. His division of the acids according to degree of oxidation has been Httie altered. He introduced the terms anhydride and amphoteric and designated the chlorides in a manner similar to that used for the oxides. [Pg.115]

Boron oxide is an add anhydride. Aluminum shows some nonmetallic character in that its oxide is amphoteric. [Pg.721]

The metallic properties increase down any column and towards the left in any row on the periodic table. One important metallic property is that metal oxides are base anhydrides. A base anhydride will produce a base in water. These are not oxidation-reduction reactions. Many metal oxides are too insoluble for them to produce any significant amount of base. However, most metal oxides, even those that are not soluble in water, will behave as bases to acids. A few metal oxides, and their hydroxides, are amphoteric. Amphoteric means they may behave either as a base or as an acid. Amphoterism is important for aluminum, beryllium, and zinc. Complications occur whenever the oxidation number of the metal exceeds +4 as in the oxides that tend to be acidic. [Pg.284]

During the appropriate tests phthalic anhydride was smoothly esterified with 2-ethylhexanol in the mole ratio 1 4. The reaction temperature rose to 200°C. after about 15 minutes, then rose slowly up to 210°C. till the end of the esterification. Table I shows the esterification time in hours after 99.9% conversion, while continuously removing the reaction water, according to the acid number relative to monooctyl phthalic acid. Furthermore, it indicates the ester colors according to the iodine scale in milligrams iodine/100 ml., whereby 1 mg. iodine/100 ml. can be more or less compared with a dye number of 120 APHA. Since, the values are obtained with the same starting materials, it is possible to compare the color numbers. They show that with the same times, the amphoteric catalysis achieves better colors than in the reaction course containing catalytically effective acids. [Pg.88]

An acidity scale has been proposed in which the difference in the acidity parameters. (aB — aA), of a metal oxide and a nonmetal oxide is the square root of the enthalpy of reaction of the acid and base.4 Thus for reaction 9.5, the enthalpy of reaction is —8fikJ mol-1 and so the a values of CaO and SiO, differ by about 9 units. Selected values are fisted in Table 9.1. Although based on the Lux-Flood concept, the values are obviously of more general interest. The most basic oxide, as expected, is cesium oxide, amphoteric oxides have values near zero (water was chosen to calibrate the scale at a value of 0.0). and the most acidic oxide is CLO,. the anhydride of perchloric acid. [Pg.172]

The cationic Surfmers produced much smaller particle sizes in the emulsion polymerization of styrene and styrene/butyl acrylate than the amphoterics (20-50 nm versus 100-300 nm). Some of the latter, however, conferred to the copolymer lattices stability to electrolytes and freeze-thaw [24]. Similar, but nonreactive surfactants produced from succinic anhydride gave similar stability but had much inferior water resistance [25]. [Pg.219]

The base anhydride of NaOH is Na20. Oxides of metals in the middle groups of the periodic table (III through V) lie on the border between ionic and covalent behavior and are frequently amphoteric. An example is aluminum oxide (AI2O3), which dissolves to only a limited extent in water but much more readily in either acids or bases ... [Pg.628]

Hydroxyl (serine) and sulfhydryl groups (cysteine) are also silylated. These derivatives can be used in peptide synthesis by the phosphoryl chloride, imidazole, mixed anhydride, or p-nitrophenyl ester methods. An attractive feature is that the silyl groups are removed merely by treatment with water in the normal workup. Trimethylchlorosilane is not suitable because of the amphoteric nature of the amino acids. [Pg.947]

Acidic oxides (acid anhydrides) are shaded red, amphoteric oxides are shaded purple, and basic oxides (basic anhydrides) are shaded blue. An amphoteric oxide is one that shows some acidic and some basic properties. Figure 6-8 The normal oxides of the representative elements in their maximum oxidation states. An amphoteric, water-soluble polymer support functionalized with a bidentate phosphine has been reported (Scheme 46). Starting from poly(maleic anhydride)-f-poly(methylvinylether), 91 was prepared by reaction with a bis(diphenylphosphino)ethylamine. Polymers with different phosphine loadings were made and soluble Rh complexes formed by reaction with [Rh(COD)] - - OTf. These supported metal complexes were then screened for activity in hydrogenation reactions. Recovery of the catalyst was effected by changing the pH of the reaction mixture to <7.5. [Pg.696]

Fatty acids are raw materials for fatty amines, ethoxylated fatty amines, quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats), fatty acid-polyamine condensates, fabric softeners based on esterquats, fatty add amides, alkyl keten dimers for paper sizing and amphoteric surfactants. Binding of oleic add anhydride to cellulose fibre by chemical grafting is a recently introduced sustainable process to protect construction timber for outdoor use, such as pinewood shutters, from moisture and outside attack. Impregnation of the wood involves two stages firstly in an autoclave, where vacuum and pressure ensure its penetration, and then in a tank where the wood is soaked in a bath of anhydride, to encourage grafting of the anhydride on the wood. ... [Pg.218]

Virtually all treatments in commercial use are chosen to chemically bond an organic species to the filler surface, thus improving compatibility with organic polymers. The most common functionalities used for this are acids or acid precursors, such as anhydrides (for basic or amphoteric fillers) and alkoxy-silanes (for fillers with metal hydroxyls present, especially siliceous fillers). Organo-titanates and related compounds are also proposed for nse with a wide variety of fillers. [Pg.154]

Beryllium is at the top of Group 2A. Its oxide is amphoteric, whereas oxides of the heavier members are basic anhydrides (see Section 5-9). Metallic character increases from top to bottom within a group and from right to left across a period. This results in increasing basicity and decreasing acidity of the oxides in the same directions, as shown in the following table. [Pg.1043]

Quaternary amonium salts [796], tertiary amines or pyridines [797], bicyclic tertiary amines, cryptants [798] or amphoteric alkylamino sulfonates [799] are suitable as accelerators for this 3-component esterification. Liberation of the aldehyde 280 from its depot form, the bisulphite adduct, may taken place under the reaction conditions in a hydrocarbon [800] or better in ethyl acetate [801]. In order to minimize the occurrence of side products, keeping the aqueous phase more alkaUne for removal of the casually produced small amounts of pyrethroid acid anhydride 305 [802] is recommended. More expedient is the activation of such anhydrides by 4-dimethyl-... [Pg.131]
