The laboratories have a quality manager and quality section. The quahty section prepares all of the analytical quality control (AQC) standards for the laboratories, including spiked and duplicate samples. The quality section is a separate laboratory with a separate supply of deionized water, glassware, balances and chemicals. The latter, wherever possible, are purchased from a different source to those for the analytical sections. These actions ensure a more independent approach to quality control.

The Analytical section has been subjected to some changes. An electrically heated combustion furnace, some new methods of analysis, and the method of Rast for the determination of molecular weights, are also described. Chapter XLIV. on tests for some common organic substances has been completely rewritten. 

In the miscellaneous analytical section some references are given to additional exercises which the advanced student may undertake after perusal of the original literature. 

DCLS is the analytical regulatory laboratory for the State of Virginia, and is staffed by nearly 350 employees analyzing over a million samples a year. The laboratory consists of a Quality Assurance Section and the Bureaus of Chemistry, Forensic Science, Microbiological Science, and Technical and Logistic Support. The QA program is based on a Division QA Policy mandated by the Laboratory Director, and a Division QA Plan which establishes broad guidelines for more specific Bureau QA Plans. Each Bureau is divided into diverse analytical sections which operate under even more individualized QA plans that are patterned after the Bureau Plan.

When hydrated, salt-containing, moist, or otherwise impure starting materiak are used, their purity must be determined. Some of the usable methods are described in the Analytical Section. The results of such a determination may suitably be expressed, not as per cent, but as the... 

The analysis of mixtures of Schaeffer salt and R salt is described in the Analytical Section. 

The benzo light dyes have more recently been sold under the name, Sirius Light, f It is essential to determine the purity of the starting materials. Anilinedisulfonic acid andmaphthylaminesulfonic acid are analyzed by titration with nitrite, phenyl-J acid by titration with diazobenzene (see Analytical Section, pages 386- 90). 

The analytical section houses the components and instrumentation necessary for analysis and sample collection of slipstreams of gas. The gases are analysed for residual toxic gases such as furans and dioxins, as well as total organic carbon, total carbon and suspended particles.
