Anagrapha falcifera

Baculoviruses are generally named after the insect from which they were first isolated. For example, Cydia pomonella granulovirus (CpGV) was isolated initially from codling moth larvae and Anagrapha falcifera nuclear polyhedrovirus (AfNPV) was isolated from the alfalfa looper. This nomenclature is now widely accepted but it often conceals the number of insects that can be infected and the preferred insect host of the virus. [Pg.68]

How proteinase works to achieve this improvement has not yet been elucidated. Lynn (2003 a) demonstrated that, in spite of the fact that trypsin treatment can increase infectivity of baculovirus, this enhancement does not happen for all cell-virus systems. AcMNPV infectivity of Trichoplmia ni (TN-368) cells increased 4750-fold using trypsin. For Anagrapha falcifera NPV (AfMNPV), the improvement was 77 000- fold. On the other hand, the infectivity of these two viruses for the Lymantria dispar (LIPLB-LdE) cell line was slightly reduced. [Pg.466]

Specificity. The specificity and safety of baculoviruses were reviewed by Doller 11) and Groner (25). All tests indicate that the NPVs do not infect man and other vertebrates or, for the most part, other orders of insects. Most NPVs are pathogenic to only a few closely related species of insects. Some NPVs have been demonstrated to infect only a single species of insect. A few broader spectrum NPVs, such as the Autographa califomica NPV, the Anagrapha falcifera NPV, and the Mamestra brassicae NPV 26,12) infect many species of Lepidoptera in the family Noctuidae and several species in other families of Lepidoptera. There are a few reports of NPVs from Lepidoptera infecting insects in other orders. A low level of replication of the Autographa califomica NPV was reported in a mosquito cell line, order Diptera (56). Spodoptera littoralis NPV was reported to cause a lethal... [Pg.325]
