Figure 11.14 Analysis of amphetamines by GC-NPD following HS-SPME exti action from human hair (a) Normal hair (b) normal hair after addition of amphetamine (1.5 ng) and methamphetamine (16.1 ng) (c) hair of an amphetamine abuser. Peak identification is as follows 1, a-phenethylamine (internal standard) 2, amphetamine 3, methamphetamine 4, N-propyl-/3-phenethyamine (internal standard). It is important to consider that the behavioral outcome of amphetamine-induced alterations in monoamine release is determined by changes induced in postsynaptie targets of monoamine neurons. The consequences of... [Pg.137]

This chapter discusses the responses of these extrapyramidal neuropeptide systems to the amphetamine analogs methamphetamine (METH), methylene dioxyamphetamine (MDA), and methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA). These dmgs were selected for this study because they represent somewhat diverse mechanisms of action. While all three agents are able to enhance extrapyramidal serotonergic activity (Schmidt et al. 1987). only METH has been characterized as a substantial stimulant of the DA system. The effects of MDA and MDMA on extrapyramidal DA systems have not been well elucidated. Thus, evaluating and comparing the responses of the SP, NT, and Dyn extrapyramidal systems to these dmgs will help to determine the nature of the DA responses to METH, MDA, and MDMA administrations. [Pg.260]

The differential vulnerability of fine and beaded 5-HT axons, combined with evidence from anterograde transport that fine and beaded fibers arise from the DR and MR nuclei, respectively, led to the proposal that axons from the DR nucleus are selectively vulnerable to the neurotoxic effects of psychotropic amphetamines, while the MR projection is resistant. The prior anterograde transport study (Kosofsky 1985 Kosofsky and Molliver 1987) sampled a relatively small number of neurons in the central portions of the DR and MR nuclei and suggested a predominantly differential origin of the two axon types. In order to determine directly whether the DR and MR projections are differentially sensitive to psychotropic amphetamines,... [Pg.287]

Identify the typical signs and symptoms of intoxication associated with the use of alcohol, opioids, cocaine/amphetamines, and cannabis, and determine the appropriate treatment measures to produce a desired outcome following episodes of intoxication. [Pg.525]

The treatment goals for withdrawal from ethanol, cocaine/ amphetamines, and opioids include (1) a determination if pharmacologic treatment of withdrawal symptoms is necessary, (2) management of medical manifestations of withdrawal such as hypertension, seizures, arthralgias, and nausea, and (3) referral to the appropriate program for substance abuse treatment. [Pg.525]
