AMOCO Polybutenes

Amoco polybutenes are a family of viscouS/ non-drying liquid polymers. They are colorless, virtually odorless, chemically stable and resist oxidation by light and moderate heat. Their unique characteristics can be used to enhance and improve the performance properties of a wide variety of end-products in many diferent industries.

The simulation results are shown in Fig. 13.34 for the Newtonian, Amoco Polybutene (PB) H-100 of weight average molecular weight Mw = 103 and a constant viscosity up to 10s 1 of 19Pa s. Amoco developed polybutene olefin sulfonate for EOR (174). Exxon utilized a synthetic alcohol alkoxysulfate surfactant in a 104,000 ppm high brine Loudon, Illinois micellar polymer small field pilot test which was technically quite successful (175). This surfactant was selected because oil reservoirs have brine salinities varying from 0 to 200,000 ppm at temperatures between 10 and 100°C. Petroleum sulfonate apphcabdity is limited to about 70,000 ppm salinity reservoirs, even with the use of more soluble cosurfactants, unless an effective low salinity preflush is feasible.

Witco s petroleum sulfonate, Petronate TRS 12B, is similar to Petrostep 465, and Witco s Petronate TRS lOB falls between Petro-step 465 and Petrostep 450. The Salinity Requirement Diagram of Amoco s (polybutene) Sulfonate 151 lies even lower than the diagrams for Petrostep 465 and Petronate TRS 12B. Midpoint salinity for that sulfonate at 5.0 percent surfactant in the system is about five percent SDSW.
