Ammonium nitrate filler

RDX is used in most of the better explosives in service today, ranging from composition B, the standard bomb-filler used by the Air Force, to composition C-4, the best of the plastic explosives. The following process is the cheapest and easiest method I ve found for RDX production. It uses only three chemicals—ammonium nitrate, acetic anhydride, and paraformaldehyde. All three arc readily available, but procuring the acetic anhydride can be a bit touchy, however, as it is widely used in the production of the illegal thug methamphetamine, or "crystal," as it s called on the streets. 

The resulting AN solution may be handled in various ways103. It can be stored as a solution, used in down-stream plants or sold as a solution it can be formed into solid AN by prilling or granulation, or it can be mixed with a solid filler. The most common filler is calcium carbonate in the form of ground limestone, dolomite or by-product calcium carbonate. This product is known as Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (CAN) and can be prilled or granulated. Granular products that contain AN and either ammonium or calcium sulphate are also manufactured.

Given that inorganic filler is a mixture of salts (potassium, magnesium ehlo-rides magnesium sulfates potassium and ammonium nitrates), it was shown (Table 1.2) that exactly nitrogen-containing salts led to a significant increase of the melt flow index in sevilene-based PCMs. 

Many different combinations of ingredients have been used, both militarily and commercially. The most recent United States military ammonal consists of 22 percent ammonium nitrate, 67 percent TNT, and 11 percent flaked aluminum. The oxygen balance of the compound is 55 percent to C02 and 22 percent to CO. The major use of this composition is as a projectile filler.
