Aminoglycosides, 292 Anticancer drugs

Use of suboptimal doses of drugs in serious disease, sacrificing efficacy for avoidance of serious adverse effects, has been documented. It particularly affects drugs of low therapeutic index (see Index), i.e. where the effective and toxic dose ranges are close, or even overlap, e.g. heparin, anticancer drugs, aminoglycoside antimicrobials. In these cases dose adjustment to obtain maximum benefit with minimum risk requires both knowledge and attentiveness. [Pg.22]

Based on its considerable nephrotoxic potential, cisplatin should be given after, rather than before, other anticancer drugs and other drugs with a low therapeutic index (for example aminoglycoside antibiotics or bleomycin) that are primarily excreted in the urine in unchanged form. Concomitant use of potentially nephrotoxic agents (for example conventional amphotericin, tacrohmus) with cis-platin should be avoided (279,280). [Pg.2864]

Some medications can cause temporary alopecia. These include anticancer (antineoplastic) agents, gold salts, sulfonamides, anticonvulsants, aminoglycosides, and nonsteroideal antiflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as indomethacin. [Pg.402]
