There is much more to the stoiy than the CD and software rip-offs. As we mentioned at the beginning of this essay, there are today more than 500,000 foreign-invested companies in China. Many of the multinationals in fact have multiple operations that must protect IP. Table 7 shows the results of the annual survey of U.S. companies in China by the American Chamber of Commerce ( AmCham ). IP protection ranks foiuth in terms of the number of companies who said IP protection was a problem for them. Even at fourth, 76% is a large ratio.

Membership in local specialty chambers of commerce like women s chambers, gay and lesbian chambers, Hispanic chambers, or African-American chambers can raise the organization s visibility and foster in employees the sense that management is committed to diversity goals. It can also lead to new candidates or business parmers, directly or indirectly. For instance, although the people and groups supported may not be civil engineers, a presence in the community may lead to new diversity candidate referrals. 

ASSE, AIHA, NSC Yes. The American Public Health Association and Public Citizen and 0MB Watch and groups like the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health. Sure. But these groups can t match the muscle of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce or the National Association of Manufacturers. 

The American Tort Reform Association (ATRA), an umbrella group heavily funded by the tobacco industry, coordinated the business community s lobbying efforts at the federal level and provided resources to more than forty affiliated state organizations. A separate entity, called the Product Liability Coordinating Committee (PLCC), purported to represent more than 700,000 companies and small business organizations, but its primary supporters were the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the Business Roundtable, and the National Association...
