Butyne trimerizes in the presence of aluminum chloride to give hexamethyl Dewar-benzene (W. Schafer, 1967). Its irradiation leads not only to aromatization but also to hexa-methylprismane (D.M. Aluminum chloride hydroxide [1327-41 -9] [10284-64-7], AlQ(OH)2 [14215-15-7], AlQ2(OH), products, commonly known as polyaluminum chlorides (PAG), are used for a wide variety of industrial appHcations. Other names for PAG are basic aluminum chloride, polybasic aluminum chloride, aluminum hydroxychloride, aluminum oxychloride, and aluminum chlorohydrate. The presence of polymeric, aluminum-containing cations, the distribution of which can differ gready, typifies PAG products. ACH (2) [Aluminium chlorohydrate] This is the common name for some types of basic aluminum chloride, but the name has been used also to designate the process by which such a product is made. Nitration of hydroxypropiophenone (7-1) followed by conversion of the phenol to its methyl ether by means of methyl iodide provides the intermediate (7-2) the nitro group is then reduced to the corresponding amine (7-3) by catalytic reduction. The newly introduced amine is then replaced by a nitrile group by successive conversion to the diazonium salt by means of nitrous acid followed by treatment with cuprous cyanide (7-4). The nitrile is next hydrolyzed to the carboxylic acid (7-7) by means of sulfuric acid. The acid is then converted to its acid chloride by means of thionyl chloride and that treated with 2-(A -piperidyl)ethanol (7-8). Naming becomes more difficult if the molecular complexity of a compound changes when it is fused or vaporized. Aluminum chloride is an ionic solid but vaporizes to dimeric molecules the solid is then aluminum trichloride whereas the vapor is dialuminum hexachloride. Similar considerations hold also for FeCl3, P2O5, and a number of additional compounds. Likewise, phosphorus(V) chloride is an appropriate name for PCI5 in the vapor state, but an ideal system of nomenclature should find some way of indicating that the solid consists of equal quantities of PCl and PClJf ions.
