Aluminium waters

Toluene is mixed with a haloid combination of butane and boiled with addition of chloride or bromide of aluminium. Water is added to the product and it is then distilled with steam, and that portion which distils over at a temperature between 170° and 200° C. is taken and treated with fuming nitric acid and fuming sulphuric acid. The resulting product is washed with water and crystallised from alcohol. 

In one Instance, a pyrotechnic preparation, which contained aluminium, water traces, potassium chlorate and potassium and barium nitrates detonated violently twenty four hours after teing prepared. A mixture of barium nitrate, aluminium and magnesium proves very sensitive to friction or impact (risk of ignition or spontaneous detonation).

Immerse the reaction flask with multineck adaptor in an aluminium water tank of the type shown in Figure 3.18. This tank is thermostatted at 40 1 °C. Insert the cold trap and sampling fitting with Gaco seal into the multineck adaptor. Maintain the cold trap at -60 °C with Cardice/isopropanol during the whole run.
