Alumina octahedra

The ideal layered silicate is the mineral montmorrillonite, which is main component of the clay bentonite (fig 6). Montmorrillonite is a so called 2 1 layered silicate. Each layer consists of two sheets of silica tetrahedrae which are sandwiched by an alumina octahedrae sheet. The layers are only weakly bound, often by hydrogen bonding from water. The structure has been extensively studied by transmission electron diffraction especially by Z5wagin and coworkers [4]. [Pg.401]

Currently, the only biological barrier registered as a biochemical pest control agent is kaolin, a clay mineral [47]. Kaolin is a ubiquitous clay substance found in soils worldwide and consists of a layered silicate mineral, with one tetrahedral sheet linked through oxygen atoms to one octahedral sheet of alumina octahedra [Al2Si205(0H)4]. [Pg.338]

The principal class of swelling clays is smectite. This type of mineral comprises beidellite, hectorite, fluorhectorite, saponite, sauconite, montmorillonite, and nontronite. The cis isomer is defined as that compound in which the three methyl keto groups are on adjacent corners of the octahedral structure the trans isomer has two of the methyl keto groups on opposite apexes of the octahedron. Both the cis and trans isomers should be di-racemates, but their resolution has not been reported. Illite [(K,H30)(AlMg,Fe) (Si,Al)p ((0H), (Hp))] is a non-expanding micaceous mineral. It occurs as aggregates of small monoclinic grey to white crystals. It is layered alumina-silicate consisting of poorly hydrated potassium Cation, which is responsible for the poor swelling behavior. Its structure consists of repetition of tetrahedron- octahedron - tetrahedron (TOT) layers.
