Alternative component case example

The occurrence of twinned crystals is a widespread phenomenon. They may consist of individuals that can be depicted macroscopically as in the case of the dovetail twins of gypsum, where the two components are mirror-inverted (Fig. 18.8). There may also be numerous alternating components which sometimes cause a streaky appearance of the crystals (polysynthetic twin). One of the twin components is converted to the other by some symmetry operation (twinning operation), for example by a reflection in the case of the dovetail twins. Another example is the Dauphine twins of quartz which are intercon-verted by a twofold rotation axis (Fig. 18.8). Threefold or fourfold axes can also occur as symmetry elements between the components the domains then have three or four orientations. The twinning operation is not a symmetry operation of the space group of the structure, but it must be compatible with the given structural facts. [Pg.223]

Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approaches are emerging as alternative detailed tools for examining polymerization systems with complex mixing and reactor components. Feed Composition. Feed composition has a substantial effect on the economics of a distillation. Distillations tend to become uneconomical as the feed becomes dilute. There are two types of dilute feed cases, one in which the valuable recovered component is a low boiler and the second when it is a high boiler. When the recovered component is the low boiler, the absolute distillate rate is low but the reflux ratio and the number of plates is high. An example is the recovery of methanol from a dilute solution in water. When the valuable recovered component is a high boiler, the distillate rate, the reflux relative to the high boiler, and the number of plates all are high. An example for this case is the recovery of acetic acid from a dilute solution in water. For the general case of dilute feeds, alternative recovery methods are usually more economical than distillation. [Pg.175]

This chapter has shown many examples of the use of CALPHAD methods, ranging from an unusual application in a binary system, through complex equilibrium calculations to calculations for 10-component alloy systems. In all cases the use of CALPHAD methods has enhanced the understanding of processes, clearly defined alloy behaviour and provided vital information for other models, etc. It is also clear that equilibrium calculations can be used in many different areas and under a surprising number of different conditions. For numerous reasons, modelling will never completely replace experimental measurement. However, die quantitative verification of the accuracy of CALPHAD calculations now means that they can be seriously considered as an information source which can be used as an alternative to experimental measurement in a number of areas and can also enhance interpretation of experimental results. [Pg.419]
