Alloys containing thallium

For the alloys containing less than 70 atomic percent thallium the powder photographs showed the reflection 620. For the other alloys in the A1 phase the photographs contained reflections only as far as 600 and 442. Alloys of lead and thallium 2 are distinctive in that they have higher melting points than either component. The amount of thallium varies from 3 to 65 per cent. The alloy containing 10% thallium, 20% tin, and 70% lead is resistant to the corrosive action of mixtures of sulfuric, nitric, and hydrochloric acids. This alloy is especially recommended for use as anode for the electrolytic deposition of copper, in which its corrosion is less than one-fifth that of lead alone. 

Alloy samples weighing either 100 or 25 g. were prepared by melting weighed amounts of lead and thallium together. The c. p. granular test lead, free from silver, gold and bismuth (Fisher Scientific Company), was indicated by spectroscopic examination to contain approximately 0-005 % iron, 0-001 % thallium and 0-001 % copper. The thallium used was supplied by the Varlacoid Company. Spectroscopic examination showed the presence of approximately 0-01 % lead, 0-005 % iron, and 0-001 % copper. 

Notes on cluster phases in triel alloys. Li and Corbett (2004) have shortly reviewed the systematic and extensive experimental and theoretical work carried out by Corbett and co-workers (see for instance Corbett 1996). Considering alkali metal-triel alloys, they underlined, particularly for Ga, In and Tl, the richness of their chemistry (see also 5.3.4.4). Gallium forms many anionic network structures (and only a few phases containing isolated cluster units), indium gives several examples of both network and discrete cluster structures, thallium forms especially discrete clusters (Tl , T157A Tl , Tl , Tl(f, Tl ).
