Ionomer resins consisting of ethylene—methacrylic acid copolymers partially neutralized with sodium or zinc were commercially introduced in 1964 by Du Pont under the Surlyn trademark (1). More recently, a similar line of products, sold as Hi-Milan resins, has been commercialized by Mitsui—Du Pont in Japan. Iolon ionomeric resins, based on ethylene—acrylic acid, are produced by Exxon in Belgium. Ionomers containing about 1 mol % of carboxylate groups are offered by BP in Europe as Novex resins. Low molecular weight, waxy Aclyn ionomers are produced and sold by AlliedSignal. 

Spectra Shield is a product of AlliedSignal that is made by means of a woven fabric of Spectra polyethylene fiber. Figure 4.28 shows a schematic of cross-plied (0°/90°) Spectra fibers in a resin matrix. Helmets, hard armor for vehicles, and soft body armor are shown in Fig. 4.29. The helmet manufacture involves a special version of Spectra Shield, a special shell design, and a three-way adjustable liner of shock absorbing foam padding. These helmets were used by the UN peacekeeping troops from France in 1993 and were introduced to police forces in the US and Europe. A soft body armor of polyethylene fiber consists of five Spectra Shield plies that slide into the pockets in the body armor. 

Finally, caprolactam could also be obtained by recycling polyamide-6 (PA-6) and polyamide-6,6 (PA-6,6) waste. Rhodia recycles about 30 000tons annually of PA-6 wastes in three different places in Europe. PA-6 production waste as well as used pure PA-6 wastes (fish nets and pure PA-6 fabrics) are used as starting products. PA-6,6 is also recycled. DSM and AlliedSignal opened a pilot plant in Richmond, Virginia, in 1997, where PA-6 carpets are depolymerized. The technology involves chemical processing of complete carpets without an expensive mechanical separation of fibers from the other carpet components. 

PEN mnltifilament fibers are commercially available from several polyester fiber prodncers. These include Teijin in Japan, Honeywell (formally AlliedSignal) in the United States and Enrope, Kosa in Europe, and Hyosimg in Korea. PEN fibers are produced in a melt spinning/post-drawing process similar to that used in PET fiber manufacture. All production to date is in the form of continuous multifilament yarn, although staple and monofilament fabrication have also been reported.
